Authorship and Contribution

PIETAS: Jurnal Studi Agama dan Lintas Budaya (Journal of Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies) recognizes authorship as a responsibility that reflects substantial intellectual contribution to scholarly work. The journal follows internationally recognized principles of responsible authorship and encourages transparency regarding individual contributions to published research.

All individuals listed as authors must meet the authorship criteria and must be able to take responsibility for the content, integrity, and accuracy of the published work.

Authorship Criteria

To qualify as an author, an individual should have made substantial contributions to one or more of the following aspects:

  • Conception or design of the research;
  • Development of theoretical frameworks, research approaches, or analytical perspectives;
  • Collection, generation, or interpretation of research data, materials, texts, or sources;
  • Data analysis, interpretation, or critical evaluation of findings;
  • Drafting the manuscript or making substantial intellectual revisions;
  • Approval of the final version of the manuscript; and
  • Acceptance of responsibility for the integrity, accuracy, and ethical compliance of the published work.

Contributor Roles

PIETAS encourages authors to describe individual contributions using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), where applicable.

Author contributions may include:

  • Conceptualization: Development of research ideas, objectives, and theoretical framework.
  • Methodology: Development of research methods, analytical approaches, or study design.
  • Investigation: Conducting research activities, data collection, fieldwork, textual analysis, or source examination.
  • Data Curation: Management, organization, and preparation of research data or materials.
  • Formal Analysis: Analysis and interpretation of research findings or evidence.
  • Writing – Original Draft: Preparation of the initial manuscript.
  • Writing – Review & Editing: Critical revision, improvement, and intellectual refinement of the manuscript.
  • Supervision: Oversight, academic guidance, or research leadership.
  • Project Administration: Coordination and management of research activities.
  • Funding Acquisition: Obtaining financial support for the research project.

Author Order

The order of authorship should reflect the relative contributions of each author and must be agreed upon by all authors before manuscript submission.

Disputes regarding author order should be resolved among authors before submission. PIETAS does not determine the order of authorship but may request clarification when authorship concerns arise.

Corresponding Author

The corresponding author is responsible for communication with the journal throughout the submission, peer-review, revision, and publication processes.

The corresponding author must ensure that:

  • All listed authors have approved the manuscript submission;
  • All authors agree with the authorship order;
  • Author contributions are accurately reported;
  • Communication with the journal is conducted effectively; and
  • All ethical requirements and publication policies are fulfilled.

Changes in Authorship

Any request to add, remove, or rearrange authors after manuscript submission must be accompanied by a written explanation and agreement from all authors involved.

Changes in authorship after acceptance or publication will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and must follow appropriate editorial procedures.

Guest, Gift, and Ghost Authorship

PIETAS does not permit inappropriate authorship practices, including:

  • Guest authorship: Listing individuals as authors who have not made substantial intellectual contributions.
  • Gift or honorary authorship: Including individuals based solely on position, reputation, institutional affiliation, seniority, or personal relationships.
  • Ghost authorship: Excluding individuals who made significant contributions to the research or manuscript preparation.

Acknowledgement of Non-Author Contributors

Individuals who contribute to the research but do not meet authorship criteria may be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements section.

Examples include research assistants, language translators, administrative support, technical assistance, community contributors, or individuals providing access to research materials.

Responsibility and Accountability

All authors share responsibility for the integrity of the published work. Authors must ensure that:

  • The manuscript represents original scholarly work;
  • Research methods and findings are accurately reported;
  • Sources and intellectual contributions are properly acknowledged;
  • Ethical requirements have been fulfilled; and
  • Any errors discovered after publication are promptly reported to the Editorial Office.
