Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

DEVOTION: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat recognizes the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI tools in academic writing, research, community engagement activities, and scholarly publishing. The journal permits responsible use of AI-assisted technologies when they support, but do not replace, human intellectual contribution, academic judgment, ethical responsibility, and accountability.

This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors to ensure transparency, originality, confidentiality, research integrity, and responsible use of AI throughout the publication process.

AI Use by Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted tools for limited purposes, such as language improvement, grammar correction, translation, formatting assistance, or improving manuscript readability.

However, AI tools must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution, including critical analysis, interpretation of findings, evaluation of community engagement outcomes, decision-making, or scholarly discussion.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, ethical compliance, and integrity of all submitted content.

AI systems or tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship requires human responsibility, accountability, approval of the final manuscript, and the ability to respond to questions regarding the work.

Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the substantial use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies during manuscript preparation, analysis, or revision.

The disclosure should include:

  • The name of the AI tool or service used.
  • The purpose of its use.
  • The extent of human verification, review, and modification.

When applicable, authors may include the following statement before the References section:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool/service] for [purpose]. The author(s) reviewed, verified, and edited the generated content and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final manuscript.

Routine use of basic tools for spelling correction, grammar checking, formatting, or reference management generally does not require disclosure.

AI Use in Community Engagement Activities

When AI technologies are used as part of a community engagement program, intervention, training activity, data analysis, or technological solution, authors must clearly explain their use in the manuscript Methods section.

Authors should describe:

  • The AI system or tool used.
  • The purpose and role of the technology.
  • The data or inputs used.
  • The implementation and evaluation process.
  • The role of human supervision and verification.
  • Relevant ethical and privacy considerations.

Accuracy and Verification

Authors are responsible for verifying all AI-assisted content before submission. AI systems may produce inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or fabricated information.

Authors must verify all factual information, statistical data, quotations, references, interpretations, institutional information, community data, and conclusions generated or supported by AI tools.

AI-generated references must not be included unless the authors verify that the sources exist and accurately support the cited statements.

AI and Research Integrity

The use of AI to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or misrepresent scholarly information is strictly prohibited.

Prohibited practices include:

  • Fabricating community engagement data or outcomes.
  • Creating fictitious participants, partners, or activities.
  • Generating false quotations or testimonials.
  • Producing nonexistent references.
  • Manipulating research or evaluation results.
  • Presenting AI-generated materials as authentic documentation.

Such practices may be considered violations of DEVOTION's Publication Ethics.

AI-Generated Images and Multimedia

Authors must disclose the use of AI for creating or substantially modifying images, figures, videos, audio, or other multimedia materials included in manuscripts.

AI-generated materials must not be presented as authentic documentation of community activities, participants, locations, or outcomes when they do not represent actual events.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Authors must not upload confidential, sensitive, or personally identifiable information related to community participants, organizations, institutions, or other individuals into public AI systems without appropriate authorization and data protection measures.

Authors remain responsible for protecting participant privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and ethical rights.

AI Use by Reviewers

Reviewers must protect the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and peer-review materials. Unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, author information, or confidential materials must not be uploaded into public AI systems where confidentiality and data security cannot be guaranteed.

AI tools must not replace reviewers' independent academic judgment. Reviewers remain responsible for their evaluations, recommendations, and comments.

AI Use by Editors

Editors must protect confidential manuscript information and unpublished materials. Submitted manuscripts and editorial documents must not be uploaded to public AI systems for evaluation, reviewer selection, or editorial decisions when confidentiality cannot be ensured.

Editorial decisions must be made by qualified human editors based on scholarly merit, peer review recommendations, ethical standards, and journal policies.

Violations of AI Policy

Failure to disclose significant AI use, misuse of confidential information, fabrication of AI-generated content, or misrepresentation of AI-assisted materials may result in editorial actions.

Depending on the severity of the violation, DEVOTION may:

  • Request clarification or revision.
  • Reject the manuscript.
  • Issue corrections or expressions of concern.
  • Retract published articles.
  • Take other actions according to the journal's Publication Ethics policy.

Policy Updates

DEVOTION periodically reviews this policy to reflect developments in artificial intelligence technology, scholarly publishing practices, research integrity, and responsible academic communication.
